Artist in Residence 2024 – School of Cod

The Guild has been invited to be an ‘Artist in Residence’ at the Craft Council Gallery. Drop down to see guild members stitching various projects, using many stitching techniques. There will usually be someone in Wednesday – Friday noon – 5 PM. Stitchers will be there on Saturdays as well. The Starfish Youth Guild will meet at the Gallery in the morning for their program, with more senior stitchers joining the space in the afternoon.

As part of this ‘Artist in Residence’, pieces of works produced by guild members will be displayed in a studio on the second floor of the Craft Council at 155 Water Street, St. John’s Wednesday through Saturday noon-5 PM. The theme of the show is “School of Cod”.

Members of the Guild were challenged to stitch an image of a cod fish in an embroidery technique of their choice. Working from the same drawing, members signed up for a specific technique. The show also displays various works from guild members that are stitched using the techniques illustrated by the cod.

Following the show, the cod will be assembled in a stitch book. The book will show each stitched cod on its own page with a brief write up of the technique employed. This keepsake will be housed in the Guild’s library and will be on display again at the Embroiderers’ Association of Canada/Association Canadienne de Broderie annual national seminar when the St. John’s Guild of Embroiderers hosts the event in 2027. More about that at a later date.

The ’Artists in Residence’ Exhibition will at the Craft Council Gallery from February 17, 2024, until March 22, 2024.

Swim on by and have a look at the school!
